According to the South African Constitution, persons can register to vote at the age of 16 but can only vote at the age of 18.

Below are the exact procedures to follow for a successful IEC registration.

Step 1: Visit Your Local IEC Office

To begin with your IEC registration, you will need to visit your local IEC office. You can click here for all the local IEC offices.

Step 2: Completely Fill out a registration form.

At the IEC local office, you will be presented with a registration form to fill out. Remember that applicants will need to provide proof of address when registering.

Step 3: Provide Identification

Applicants are to provide identification for a successful IEC registration. The system will only accept a green barcoded ID book, a smart card ID, or a valid temporary identification certificate issued by Home Affairs.

Step 4: Check Your IEC Registration Status

After you are done with the aforementioned steps, you will therefore need to verify your IEC registration. In this case, you will receive a barcoded sticker or receipt, which is proof of your application.

Applicants will have up to seven (7) working days to know if their registration was successful. After this period, one can check to see if their registration is complete by:

  • Sending an SMS of your ID number to 32810. This costs R1.
  • Download the IEC mobile app and input your ID number.
  • Visiting your local IEC office to see if your registration is complete.

IEC registration can be checked in multiple ways. Either you visit your local IEC office or resort to the below options.

Apart from visiting the IEC local office to check whether your IEC registration was successful or not, applicants can also download the IEC app or via SMS.

In either of the processes, applicants are expected to provide their ID number to see if their IEC registration was successful or not.
