VIDEO: Student Nurses Jubilate and Praise Bawumiah Over Allowance

Nursing trainees throughout the country are overjoyed after they receive a MOMO alert of allowances owned by the government of Ghana.

A viral video spotted by this website on Facebook depicts several trainees at a nursing training college overwhelmed after receiving their payments.

A section of the trainees is heard praising and chanting Vice President Dr Bawumiah’s name while they show messages on their phones to the camera to confirm payment of the allowance.

“Four more for Bawumia! Alawa! Alawa!” one female trainee could be heard screaming as she showed a notification on her phone.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, as monitored by this website, a nursing student revealed that the government has settled some of their arrears.

According to her, the second and third-year students in her school have received three months’ arrears owed to them for October, November, and December.

She disclosed that none of their 2024 allowances have been settled yet.

During a campaign tour in the Bono Region by the flagbearer of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia, a final-year nursing student, confronted him when she inquired about the government student’s allowances, saying she had never received them.

“The question I want to ask is, when are we getting our ‘allowance’? Since I started school, I have not received my allowance to date, and I’m in my last semester. Some of us are not even able to pay our school fees.”.

Those who are not able to pay their fees would be sacked; they wouldn’t be allowed to write the exams. If the ‘allowance’ had been given to us, they would have been able to pay their fees. So, my question is, When are we getting the allawa?” She asked the vice president.

In a swift response, the NPP flagbearer promised to take up the issue with the Ministry of Finance.

He said, “I wasn’t sure of where you were with your ‘allowance’, but I think that I will check with the Ministry of Finance immediately after I return. And I will make sure they pay you your ‘allawa’ if it has not been paid”.
